Does cleaning fix a chimney leak?

Cleaning and leak investigation serve different purposes. If you see staining or water entry, describe that separately so it can be considered as its own concern.

Cleaning is a maintenance task with a defined scope. Before arranging a sweep, it helps to know the type of fireplace or appliance, when it was last maintained, and whether there are any concerns beyond deposits. A cleaning visit should not be confused with a structural repair or a guarantee about the entire system.

01

Identify the fireplace

A masonry fireplace, factory-built system, and appliance installation are not interchangeable. Share the system type or model information so the proposed work can match what is actually installed.

02

Agree on what is included

Ask what will be cleaned, how the surrounding room will be protected, and what findings will be reported. A clear scope is easier to review than a vague promise to make everything ready.

03

Keep a maintenance record

Save the visit date, the work description, and any recommended follow-up. These notes make the next conversation more useful, especially when a home changes hands.

Discuss this service
04

Agree on the cleaning scope

When requesting a sweep, identify the fireplace or appliance and the flue it uses. Ask which accessible parts are included, how deposits and debris will be removed, and whether the visit includes a condition review or a separate inspection service. A clean firebox face alone does not describe the condition of the passage above it. Mention any previous difficulty accessing the system before the appointment.

05

Prepare the room for a working visit

Arrange the visit when the fireplace is fully cool and will not be used beforehand. Clear ornaments and loose items from the hearth and explain any surfaces that need particular care. Let us know about stairs, parking instructions, pets, and the route through the home. Ask how the work area will be protected and which items you should move; you do not need to climb onto the roof or remove fireplace parts yourself.

06

Understand what remains after cleaning

Cleaning and repair answer different questions. If deposits have hidden a joint or damaged surface, the next step may be an inspection or a more specific recommendation. Ask what was accessible, what could not be evaluated, and whether another visit is needed. Keep the service notes with the date and appliance details so later maintenance decisions reflect the actual history rather than a guessed cleaning interval.

01Does cleaning fix a chimney leak?

Cleaning and leak investigation serve different purposes. If you see staining or water entry, describe that separately so it can be considered as its own concern.

02Can I book cleaning without knowing the fireplace type?

You can begin with a photograph taken from the room and any visible manufacturer information. The actual system and access will need to be confirmed before the work is finalized.

03Will sweeping solve smoke entering the room?

Deposits are only one possible part of a smoke complaint. Describe when the problem occurs and which appliance is involved. A clean flue is not proof that a draft or venting problem has been resolved.

04Should I book cleaning or inspection first?

If you know the concern is routine maintenance, describe the use and last service. If condition is unknown, an appliance has changed, or a report identifies damage, ask about inspection scope when booking.

05Can cleaning products replace a professional sweep?

CSIA advises that chemical chimney cleaners are not a substitute for mechanical cleaning and inspection. Ask about any products already used so the condition of the deposits can be considered.
