Start with the question you need answered

If you want to understand condition, ask about inspection. If an assessment has identified deposits that need removal, ask about cleaning. If you are unsure of the maintenance history, describe that uncertainty rather than trying to choose a technical service level yourself.

Inspection and sweeping can be part of the same maintenance conversation, but they should still be described clearly in the proposed scope.

Gather the useful details

Identify the fireplace or appliance if you can do so from an accessible label or existing paperwork. Gather previous inspection reports, maintenance dates, and any repair recommendations. Note whether the reason for the visit is routine care, a newly acquired home, or a change you have noticed.

You do not need to climb onto the roof or look inside an inaccessible part of the system to prepare for a conversation.

Ask what the visit includes

Before arranging work, ask which areas are included, how findings will be recorded, and what happens if a concern needs a separate scope. Ask whether the proposed visit includes cleaning, inspection, or both.
